THIS I ARGUE
OH SNAP!!! FOOD OUR HUMAN RIGHT.
People are starving and because of this the most vulnerable are children and women are the most affected. This very statement goes against the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” but in this very country of great wealth and technology our nations people are starving. After the Second World War, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted to prevent future violations of human rights that occur during the course of the war. The United Nations is made up with the the world most powerful countries. They came together and drafted an international law which states the rights every human being. Of those many nations United states was one of the biggest nation involved in creating the document that the United Nations use to govern. This wonderful act occurred in 1948 and since then United States have violated the very act it help create and swore to uphold. The act it violates is Article 25 which states “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing,” Governments are created to protect its citizens and it is their job to make sure the rights of the citizens is not violated. In this paper I will discuss how it is the job of the government to make sure every human being receive healthy meals and this right should not be based on the fact of financial stature but the simple basis that it is our right as human beings .
In A Place at the Table, a video documentary about the struggle of Americans to obtain food or healthy food. we witness how the American government is violating their citizens right to food. Our forefathers constructed a government for the people to protect the people. But as the documentary shows many families are being denied their right to have healthy meals because they do not have the means to obtain it. Now you may say that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is there for the people of lower income and that it is adequate. The program SNAP are benefits used “to buy food and help eligible low-income households in Pennsylvania obtain more nutritious diets by increasing their food purchasing power at grocery stores and supermarkets.” (Department of Public Welfare). In November 2013 the benefits decreased leaving many families without healthy food (Department of Public Welfare). This is where the government failed the citizens of America because it is the government job to help the people who cannot help themselves. As stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate health... Including food, to obtain adequate health one need healthy meals. The rights of people are govern and protected by the government so when the rights are violated it is the job of the government to rectify the violations.
As we are all human being we are all created in the image of God, which means we are born with value. This is not a value given by man but recognized and should not be violated by man. Our value was given to us because we are all children of God. In the creation story God “created the animals to fill the earth. On day six, God also created man and woman in his own image to commune with him. He blessed them and gave them every creature and the whole earth to rule over, for, and cultivate.” God created a world for man to live together and gave us a way to be healthy and continue his vision. He did not dictate who could and could not eat. Man was created in his likeness so we are all deserving of the same basic human right food. And as a culture we create social infrasture to continue the advancement of mankind and continue Gods vision. These infrasture like our governments are in charge of making sure man continue this vision of creation and make sure each man rights are upheld. Now many may believe that God has no place in government since there are many different religions and beliefs but God is in our government we can see it in our documents and even on our money. As a nation with God included and how would God view the violation he would see if he watched our society today. Would he approve of the children that is starving in the documentary or would he approve of the mother who cannot afford to feed her children. This is why we created government with democracy in mind to keep the officials we elect to concentrate on the need of the people in the society. The American government has failed to do the job for its people which not only violates the international law of human rights but our value that was given to us from God as being born in his likeness.
If we are made in his image and we are all his children, why are we made to suffer and starve when we have the resources to stop it. Our currency says "In God We Trust" so why are we not using what we hold so dear to put an end to what we are starving for. Shouldn't the government that takes pride in that saying make sure that the people governed are well fed as protected? If you let the people starve is that not a sin against God for we are his children made in his image so in-fact the government is starving God. Even God made sure that his people ate, provided ways so that they could nurture and care for each other with crops and good harvest.
Now their many people who cannot accept the argument about God and people as human are created in his likeness so for those people the arguments towards human rights can be found in America very own Declaration of Independence. Where Thomas Jefferson who drafted the first draft of this document used the phrase “All men are created equal.” This document signifies the very start of the United states and the document was created to assert the natural and legal rights that the people of these united states believe they deserve. But since the start of the government of United States statements like "All men are created equal" has been interpreted to fit the molding of many other people perspective on who deserve certain rights. How can you write a document that give all men, women, and children rights and then deny them the very thing we fought for so long ago? The statement continues to state that “All men" have the right to “life liberty and the pursuit of happiness” but again our government fail to even uphold the very beliefs that our forefathers wrote in the documents that America as country believe in. The constitution also start with the statement “We the people” but the people of America who live the beliefs of that sacred document starves while the government who it was created by continues to allow this injustice to occur.
America’s government has the ability to uphold international law, God's Law and our forefathers law which gives all mankind right to food. But they fail at their job. If this government can not be trusted to protect us from hunger how are we to trust this government with our lives and well being at all? As a country , we need to challenge our government and make them answer for the injustice that continue to occur to the families and their children. Whether you believe in God or not no human being deserve less than the standard of living that allow their pursuit of happiness as our ancestors foresaw for our future.
